Clay Aiken的大学生活仅剩一个学期的时候，他选择了休学，原因是他要全力竞争一项比赛，美国娱乐圈的大佬Simon Fuller打造的“American Idol”大赛，Kelly Clarkson和Justin Guarini分别是第一届的冠亚军，如今他们都已经成为美国观众眼中的偶像明星和媒体聚光灯下的宠儿。从2002年开始，激烈的竞岛N已经展开，想要成为胜利者需要拥有非常出色的才艺和形象，经过严格的层层筛选，每轮比赛得到观众投票最多的选手可以晋级，经过了选拔之后，只有两个人能够进入决赛。Clay Aiken过关斩将，一路凯歌。其中一次现场演出的'Solitaire'几乎令特别嘉宾评审Neil Sedaka感动落泪。Clay凭借著自己的实力杀进了最终的决赛，另一个进入决赛的选手是Ruben Studdard。在2003年5月21日的决赛上，共有两千四百万名观众投票参加冠军评选，Clay Aiken最终以非常微弱的劣势败给了Ruben Studdard(差1万3000票，不到总票数的百分之一)，而成为了大赛亚军，但是这同样让他获得了和著名的RCA唱片公司签约的机会。

　　在比赛结束不久以后的6月份，Clay Aiken发行了第一支单曲《This Is The Night》，立即就成为Billboard Hot 100单曲榜的冠军。2003年10月14日，Clay Aiken的第一张专辑《Measure of a Man》也正式上市发行。

同年Clay以黑马之姿赢得American Music Awards(全美音乐奖)提名最受欢迎男艺人奖项的殊荣，并应邀在Billboard颁奖典礼中演出，可见得他成熟而低沉有力的演唱技巧实力已获得大众肯定！

而虽然屈居比赛亚军，但Clay却完全抢尽冠军Ruben Studdard风采，凭借着大赛积累的强大人气，首周61万3千张的销量轻而易举的就把他推到了Billboard 200排行榜的冠军宝座上，而这一销售成绩达到了前任偶像大赛的冠军Kelly Clarkson首周销量的两倍还要多，这一成绩已经足够让在大赛中失意的Clay Aiken欣慰的了。Clay Aiken在偶像大赛中的表现，几乎征服了电视机前从12岁到40岁所有的女性观众的心。Clay也领先登上滚石杂志封面，成为美国2003年歌坛一颗超级星。
